Shelby gives immense gratitude for the art of yoga, an incredible set of tools that continually heals, grounds, and inspires her curiosity for seeking joy in life. Artist, activist, professional contemporary and hip hop dancer, and lover of laughter, she began practicing yoga in 1997. As a student, yoga has assisted her recovery from addiction, PTSD, and in the continual healing of a major spinal injury that occurred in 2003. As a teacher (since 2005), she has been blessed with an incredible array of growing experiences. Shelby was part of the Green Yoga Association’s national pilot program for environmentally sustainable yoga businesses eventually being a featured yoga teacher in Ecotistic Magazine. She has taught intensively within drug, alcohol, and eating disorder rehabilitation programs including transitional housing centers as well as with award winning dance companies as an injury recovery specialist and arm balance/inversion coach. Her sequencing was featured in the April 2013 issue of the IDEA Fitness Journal. And, she taught yoga and philosophy at The Ohio State University, ranking in the top 95% or better in overall teaching ability per student evaluation for the duration of her employment.
Shelby earned her 200 Hr certification in Astanga and Anusara Influenced Hatha yoga and her 500 Hr certification in Eclectic Hatha with a focus on yoga therapy. She has in depth yoga experience in Vinyasa, Yoga Therapy, Viniyoga, Yin, Anusara, Astanga, Restorative, Chair, Gentle, pranayama, meditation, philosophy and asana sequencing (vinyasa krama). She wrote curriculum, trained and certified teachers as a Lead Teacher within the 200 Hour Program from 2010-2013 at Yoga Well, San Diego's first Yoga Teacher Training school (founded by Kathy Lee Kappmeier) and contributed to the 300 Hour Curriculum as Program Development at Pilgrimage of the Heart Yoga. Shelby has also been faculty for the 200 Hr Yoga Teacher Trainings at both Hapa Yoga and A School for Healing Arts, and mentored within the YTT at Pilgrimage of the Heart. She has also created her own continuing education intensives - Therapeutic Yin Yoga: A Continuing Education Intensive (20 Hrs) and Modifications and Adjustments (12 Hours).
Also a certified Polarity Practitioner (integrative bodywork), Shelby's teachings pull from life experience, the Yamas and Niyamas, and the Krishnamacharya lineage, rooted in the belief that yoga “should always adapt to meet the ever changing needs of the unique individual.”
Beyond yoga, she danced professionally with the award winning Anatomical Scenario/Anna and the Annadroids (San Francisco, CA/Columbus, OH), Heart Sick (Los Angeles, CA), Urban FX (San Diego, CA), TUPACOdance (Columbus, OH), Undermine Productions (Seattle, WA), and the Ft. Wayne Dance Collective (Ft. Wayne, IN). Shelby currently freelances as a dancer and performance artist including contemporary, streetstyles, urban choreography, character, fire poi/eating, costume/prop creation and design, as well as general consulting.
Shelby loves sharing yoga, dance, health, art, and fitness with everyone as well as yoga focused for athletic/dance/circus performance preparation and training. She is also passionate about the Earth and equality. It is her honor and joy to gratefully share these practices with others.
